Stage 43 Theatrical Society was proud to host a week-long theatre festival in May, bringing together local theatre groups from around the Fraser Valley to entertain audiences and to enhance their own skills through professional adjudication by Katrina Dunn.

Katrina Dunn is currently teaching in the Theatre Program at the University of Manitoba. She was the Artistic Director of Vancouver’s Touchstone Theatre from 1997 to 2016. Over nineteen years of producing and directing within that company’s all-Canadian mandate she garnered seven Jessie Richardson nominations for Outstanding Direction, winning once for her direction of Michael Healey’s Kicked and once for her co-direction of Palace of the End. She has also directed classical and international plays at Bard on the Beach and The Arts Club Theatre. She has worked with most of Canada’s major playwrights and most of Vancouver’s noted actors and designers. She has taught acting and theatre skills at Studio 58 and UBC. Katrina helped launch the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival with Norman Armour and created In Tune: The Art of Canadian Musicals with Rachel Ditor.

This amazing event was part of one of the longest-running theatre traditions in Canada. Theatre BC’s Mainstage is an annual festival for community theatre groups throughout BC. Winning plays from each of the (up to 10) zone festivals come together for friendly competition at the provincial level. The play chosen as “Outstanding Production” at our festival - Langley Players Drama Club’s Dancing at Lughnasa - will represent the Fraser Valley Zone at Mainstage, which is taking place this year in Port Alberni from July 5–13. Break a leg, Langley!!!

Stage 43’s hosting of this festival was made possible by Spirit of Coquitlam Grant funding and countless hours of volunteer time. We appreciate all the support our community has given us over the years and were very happy to “Celebrate Community” with this event!

Check out the list of plays that were part of the festival!
